Do you feel a Need for Speeeeeeeed?

Hola!

The seasons are changing and that means ELM is moving from the trails to the city lights for our annual Need for Speed and Yoga for Runners program!  We only offer this 12 week program once per year and it is packed with specialized training, tips and coaching to help you reach your running goals next season.

Want to run faster and further without getting tired? Who doesn't??  Our Need for Speed program has evolved over the years into the perfect combination of group conditioning, individual coaching and training knowledge that our participants have used to set and reach their running Personal Best's.

All of our weekly runs will once again start and finish at Comox Rec Centre this year, with post run Yoga led by super yogi, Birgit Nilson afterwards.  I highly recommend participating in the post run Yoga as it is the perfect way to recover from your weekly speedwork sessions - not too mention it feels amazing and it is a very convenient way to get your flexibility training in.

Check out the details below along with some words from past participants and let me know if you have any questions!  Registration deadline is this Thursday and we kick off the program on Saturday with our running video analysis session- which is a very powerful tool on your journey to becoming a faster and more efficient runner.  Hope to see you there!

Cheers,
Sarah.

We pushed ourselves but the program was very well structured with goal setting and progress measurement.  I learned how to pace and push myself past the comfortable place I normally run.  My spring running was greatly improved by this clinic. I did The Kusam Klimb for the 1st time in 7 years and Need for Speed was the thing that really made it possible.

It is a program where you will feel proud of completing each session and there's also the option of yoga afterwards as a reward!  -T

If you are serious about your running, you want to run faster and further without injury.
Runners who think that more mileage and longer hours are the only ways to improve end up frustrated or sidelined with injuries. The secret to running faster and further is training smarter not longer! Making simple changes in strength, flexibility, technique, and program design will help you reach a new level of performance.

In ELM's Need for Speed clinic, Kinesiologist and Personal Trainer, Sarah Seads, demonstrates the key training principles and techniques designed to improve your running form, decrease your risk of injury and personalize your running program. Learn how the science of Kinesiology and biomechanics can help you reach your running goals in this specialized clinic.

Includes:

  • Weekly coached group running sessions with Sarah Seads.  Sessions will focus on specific running workouts designed to improve lactate threshold and VO2max using speed and hill work.  Workouts will also focos on improving running economy, turn over, mid-foot technique and sense of pace.
  • Weekly coaching topics and 'homework' to develop your own personalized running plan.
  • Video analysis and technique correction (part 1 only)- link to your video.
  • Field tests for lactate threshold and VO2max and heart rate zone creation.
  • Exercise prescription to improve running technique and correct imbalances (part 1 only).
  • ELM Running Clinic Manual

This unique running clinic is divided into two 6-week training sessions.

Part 1: After a long training or racing season it is time to take a step back and develop a plan of attack for the coming year.  This is the time of year to focus on technique, muscular imbalances and program design.

Weekly Education Topics include: Fitness Testing, Video Analysis and Biomechanics of Running & Mid-Foot Running Technique, Barefoot Running, Strength Training For Runners, Muscular Imbalances: Identification and Correction, Periodization: Annual Program Design and Cross Training for Runners.

Part 2: In the second part of this clinic we will continue to focus on techniques for building speed and power.  Learn additional training techniques that will allow you to make a breakthrough in your running ability.

Weekly Education Topics include: Exercise Physiology, Key Training Principles, Dynamic Strength Training for Runners, Speed Training Techniques, Injury Prevention and Nutrition for Optimum Performance.

ELM Need for Speed Clinic bolstered my running and racing confidence. Because Sarah has taught me to listen to my breathing while racing and monitor my heart rate while training, i am running smarter and ultimately faster. As the clinic progressed, i noticed my reluctance to push myself into higher (more painful!)  thresholds of exertion diminished. Sarah's clinic also gave me techniques to help improve the mechanics of my running which provides a focus for my warm ups and my longer runs/ races, helps reduce my risk of injury and makes me a more efficient, faster runner. Ultimately however the best part of this clinic was running, learning and stretching my limits with great people.  -D

Dark chocolate fig bars...oh my...

Do you like figs?  No?  Get outta here!

To tell you the truth, I didn't actually enjoy my first fresh fig tasting experience.  The fresh fig texture was remarkably similar to a raw sea urchin I (should never have) tried on the beach in Baja Mexico...long story.

After falling in love with dried figs, however, I may try the fresh ones again one day...

Dried figs are moist, chewy, rich, little gifts of goodness.  They are high in fibre, potassium, magnesium, vitamin B6 and go for about 37 calories per fig.  You can check out some crazy fig facts online or you can just eat them...

Honestly I didn't even know I liked them until last month when I tried an Oskri Fig Dark Chocolate Bar.  I am always looking for bars that stand up to my 'is it real food?' test.  Oskri passed the test;)

Yum!  Figs AND chocolate are meant for each other it seems!
And so I was thrilled to stumble across this bag of organic dried figs at COSTCO the other day.   I have a feeling my membership will be paid in figs and coconut oil this year...

There are only 2 ingredients in the Oskri bars so I figured they wouldn't be too hard to recreate in my kitchen...Figs...and Dark Chocolate;)

I didn't have any 'good' chocolate in the house so I modified the ingredients and came up with my own version.  These bars take about 5 minutes to make and less time to eat the whole pan if you aren't carefll:)  Don't say I didn't warn you!  Enjoy!

Dark Chocolate Fig Bars
2 cups dried organic figs
2 - 3 tablespoons dark cocoa powder
2 tablespoons organic coconut oil
*Optional: 1-2 tablespoons of chopped dark chocolate (for texture, of course:)

Chop figs and remove stems.
Mix in food processor until smooth.
Melt coconut oil and add to figs along with cocoa powder.
Mix until combined then press into lined 8*8 pan.
Refrigerate or freeze until set.
Cut into 8 or 16 bars and enjoy:)
*16 mini bars at 75 calories, 1.8g fat, 13.6g carbohydrate, .8g protein each

Ideas:
I might double the recipe and make them twice as fat next time.
I will also try using a nice 'good' dark chocolate instead of the powder/coconut oil...

Were they like the Oskri bars?  Yes...but with more texture & flavor...so...I think they were even better:)

Do you like figs?
What are your favourite fig recipes?
Try this recipe and let me know what you think!

Cheers,
Sarah.

ELM's Tyax Adventures...

Well...that was pretty much the most awesome weekend ever:)

ELM's first adventure weekend at Tyax Resort in the Chilcotin's was an amazing experience...let's just say we are planning to go back in early summer 2014 so we can do it all again when the wildflowers are in full bloom;).

Tyax Resort and Spa is located between Pemberton and Lilooet in the foothills of the South Chilcotin mountains.  As soon as you start driving north of Pemberton you realize you are not in Kansas anymore.  The terrain is totally different from anything we have on the island and that is part of the beauty.  Imagine: steep slopes, big peaks, sub alpine terrain & trees, grassy meadows, powder blue alpine lakes and pristine fresh mountain air.  All within easy reach by foot, horse, bike...or even better...floatplane:)  There are endless opportunities for adventures starting right from the resort from single day fly-in run-out epics to multi-day backcountry hut to hut trips and everything in between.  Take one look at the map of the Provincial Park and surrounding area and you will be planning your next trip before you even start your first.  And that, my friends, is why you go to Tyax.

For our first group adventure we combined a 35km mountain bike tour with a classic 25km 'ribbon-of-single track'  run on the Gun Creek Trail.  We had an awesome group of people and the energy could not have been better amongst our crew:)  A wide range of backgrounds, goals and abilities came together for the weekend but everyone seemed to find exactly what they were looking for in the mountains.

Here is a little play by play of how we spent the weekend...

Tyax has less than 30 rooms and the lodge sits right on Tyaughton lake...timber frame lodge, BIG rooms (2 queens in each), complimentary spa amenities including eucalyptus steam sauna, cedar sauna, infrared sauna, yoga studio and hot tub, dock on the lake, water sport equipment including paddle boards, kayaks and canoes...pretty much everything you could think of.  They hosted Team ELM in the best rooms in the house- walk out, side by side rooms right on lake level:)

We were told that the food was 'gourmet'.  Well...they weren't kidding- it was delicious!  Our weekend included all meals and we ate together for breakfast and lunch in the great room, with brown bag lunches on the trail.   The first night we were already planning what we were going to eat the next time...yummm...

The adventures...

We arrived on Friday afternoon and a couple of us had time to go for a quick ride right from the resort.  Within 20 minutes we were rewarded with the first of endless amazing views of the weekend.  We climbed up a gravel road to reach the lower portion of Cinnibar trail and enjoyed a blissful, sandy single track rip through red and gold fall colours back down to the resort.  Perfect ride after a long day of travel.

On Saturday morning a group of 8 of us flew from the resort to Spruce Lake by float plane with Tyax Adventures for a guided mountain bike adventure.  It was the sweetest shuttle I have ever taken;)  A 15 minute scenic flight in the smallest plane ever gave us a birds eye view of the terrain we were about to explore.

Once at Spruce Lake we unloaded the bikes, took the first of one million photos and began riding the ribbon of single track Spruce Lake is known for.  It was an awesome ride, with an awesome crew:)

Ready to roll!

Lunch on the trail - and time for another photo op:)

Our first of many 'draw dropping' wide open meadow en route to Gun Creek...

 Battle scars from the trail.

Sunday morning it was another busy day at the office...another shuttle by float plane to the trail head!  Six of us made our way to Spruce lake to run the classic Gun Creek trail all the way from the lake back to the resort.  We rode this same trail as part of our biking adventure the day before and it was cool to travel the same route by bike and by foot on consecutive days.  Both spectacular, but two very different experiences.  Mountain biking amongst that scenery is of course beautiful and a very unique experience.  But those ribbons of single track are just begging to be run:))

Heading to the trail head with the ELM Team!

Waving goodbye to our pilot as he heads back to the resort!  Did I mention the stellar blue sky we had for 4 days?  Yup.  Amazing.

Let the ribbon of single track begin!  These trails were made for running. Well, actually they were made for horses and pioneers, but you know.

Team ELM posing for yet another photo op- our faces were sore from smiling and laughing all weekend:)

The awesome alpine creek that was our 'handrail' all the way home:)

The run crew- all smiles after an epic day in the mountains!

Post run meeting at the lake!  Circle of friends...memories to last a lifetime...

Monday morning I was itching to get one last view in before driving all the way home.  Actually I was trying to figure out how I could call in sick and get back up into the alpine for one more epic but couldn't quite swing it;)  And so, we climbed back up, this time on foot,  to the Cinnibar trail at sunrise.  The colours had changed even more and there were bursts of red and yellow lining the sandy trail.  WOW.  Better on foot?  Better by bike?  You will have to go find out for yourself;)
 Sunrise run on Cinnibar

Big thank you to the Tyax team for taking such good care of us!  It was an unforgettable experience and we are already planning for 2014!

Happy Trails!

Featured Article by Esther Kane: Eating Disorders in Midlife

Today, I am featuring an article written by Comox Valley Clinical Counselor Esther Kane.  Thanks Esther!

==============================================
Featured Article: Eating Disorders in Midlife
Esther Kane
MSW, RSW, Registered Clinical Counselor
==============================================
I am seeing more and more women ages 30+ in my practice who are struggling with disordered eating. Many people think that eating disorders are only for teens and women in their twenties, but research shows this is absolutely false. In fact, the following statistics will most likely shock you.

I was lucky enough to attend a fabulous presentation recently called “The Weight-Bearing Years: Eating Disorders and Body Image Despair
In Adult Women” given by Margo Maine, PhD, & Ann Kearney-Cook, PhD. Here are some very sobering statistics these two experts give on midlife women and eating disorders:

In 2003, 1/3 of inpatient admissions to a specialized treatment center for eating disorders were over 30 years old.
43 million adult women in the United States are dieting to lose weight at any given time; another 26 million are dieting to maintain their weight.
Body image dissatisfaction in midlife has increased dramatically, more than doubling from 25% in 1972 to 56% in 1997.
A major research project found that more than 20% of the women aged 70 and older were dieting, even though higher weight poses a very low risk for death at that age, and weight loss may actually be harmful.
When asked what bothered them most about their bodies, a group of
women aged 61 to 92 identified weight as their greatest concern.
A survey of Swiss women found: 70% of women aged 30-74 were dissatisfied with their weight despite being at a normal weight; 62% of women over the age of 65 wanted to lose weight; 31% of them had dieted recently although most (62%) were normal in weight.
60% of adult women have engaged in pathogenic weight control; 40% are
restrained eaters; 40% are over eaters; only 20% are instinctive eaters; 50% say their eating is devoid of pleasure and causes them to feel guilty;90% worry about their weight.

Why are women in midlife so prone to disordered eating? Maine and Kearny-Cook describe these women as “strangers in a strange land”; that today’s women are emotional and cultural “immigrants”. They explain that with unprecedented opportunities, comes unprecedented stress and that many of these women find comfort in the rituals of disordered eating, rigid dieting, exercise and other body rituals.

This makes total sense to me. For so many mid-life women, the times certainly are a changin’… and that can be very scary. As a midlife woman myself, I sometimes shrivel at the thought of all of the choices I have before me- so many more than were available to my mother when she was my age and even more than were available to my grandmother ahead of her. I often feel the pressure to be “superwoman”- to be, do, and have it all. While it’s great that I have the choice to do all of this, it also induces a lot of stress and pressure onto one person.

Questions many women I know ask themselves around this age include:

  • Should I have children?
  • If I have children, am I a good-enough mother?
  • Should I be married?
  • If I am married, am I with the right person?
  • Do I want a career? If so, what would give me meaning and a means of supporting myself (and others)?
  • If I have a career- do I like it? What else could I be doing? How do I move up the ladder?
  • How do I manage a stressful career with raising a family?
  • How can I move up in my career and also raise a family? Is that possible? Is that what I even want?
  • Should I buy a house? Or if I own a house, can I pay the mortgage? Should I move? Am I (we) really happy here?
  • How can I fit “me” time into my insanely busy schedule?

And the list goes on…

With all of these options comes a lot of worry and stress. I find that many women in midlife never feel satisfied or feel like they’re doing enough. I don’t hear many stories of satisfaction and being okay with whatever it is they do manage to cram into their hectic lives on a daily basis. It’s as if the world before us is open-ended with different possibilities at every turn. We often lack routine and structure, or if we have it because we have children and jobs, we crave freedom and different expansive possibilities.

No wonder so many of us find comfort in controlling one of the things we feel we have some control over- food and our weight. At least that’s how we often think of it initially until it becomes out-of-control and we end up with a serious eating disorder.

If you’re interested in learning more about this fascinating subject, I recommend you get a copy of Margo Maine’s book called, “The Body Myth: Adult Women and the Pressure to be Perfect”. You can find it at:
http://www.mwsg.org/book_body_myth.htm

To end, I’ll leave you with a few tips I give clients of mine who find themselves in this situation:
  • Remember, you are only one person and you don’t have to be superwoman. Let go of trying to be “perfect” and instead, opt for being “good enough”.
  • Tell yourself that when you feel ‘out of control’ it is most helpful to let go of gripping on too tightly and instead, practise ‘letting go’ and handing things over to the Universe.
  • Lastly, remind yourself that when you start obsessing over food and your body’s shape and size; it’s always about something else bubbling beneath the surface. When this happens, ask yourself, “What just happened that is leaving me feeling so out of control? What am I feeling? I’m going to let myself just feel it and then see what happens...

You know you're a runner when...

This past Sunday some of our ELM Members completed the River Run Half Marathon Challenge- our annual Members only 1/2 marathon event that follows the beautiful Puntledge River for, well, 21.1kms.  They did absolutely awesome!  Along the way we played a little game to pass a few of the early miles...if you are a runner you know what I mean about playing games to pass miles...and you  may have even played this one...

You know you're a runner when... (fill in the blank)...

Here are a few of my faves that our River Runners came up with on Sunday:).  Can you relate?  Are YOU a runner?

...you know what a fartlek is.

...you know that body glide isn't from the naughty shop.

...you can farmer blow on the move.

...you know how to spell plantar fasciitis.

...you have more runners than dress shoes.

...you know the exact distance from your house well, pretty much anywhere up to 10k away...

...you prefer to pee in the woods.

...you carry baby wipes in your car.

...you arrange your weekend plans around your Sunday runs.

...you are already planning your next race before you have exited the finish chute of your current one.

...you have lost a toenail.

Add to the list!  How do YOU know you're a runner??

Happy Trails!

NIOF: I've never been lost...

I've never been lost but I was once turned around for several weeks . - Daniel Boone

I am super duper excited about this coming weekend...the North Island Orienteering Festival is only a few days away!  Along with a few other passionate orienteering volunteers, I am helping to put on a special weekend of orienteering events in the Comox Valley on August 10/11th.  Check out the details below and come on out and play for one or all three of this weekends events!  Orienteering is great for the whole family and open to all levels of fitness from strollers to racers and everyone in between.  Come on out this weekend to see what this fun sport is all about!  FYI: I will be organizing the Saturday afternoon event at Nymph Falls Park and would love a few more volunteers to help out so give me a shout if you have some time to spare :info@elmhealth.com .

'Cunning running'. A school room favourite, touching on geography, physical fitness, math and consequential decision making. One of the current off-beat adventure sports. An easy way to demystify compass use and map reading. Gain confidence of being alone in the woods. A scavenger hunt in the great outdoors. A life-time sport for all ages: 6 to 90. This and more is ORIENTEERING.

Comox Valley will have a unique chance to celebrate all things orienteering the weekend of August 10-11 at the first annual North Island Orienteering Festival. Saturday, August 10th, there will be two opportunities to tackle the trails with a morning course at the Cumberland Lake Campground (mass start 9:00am) and an afternoon course at Nymph Falls Park with starts between 1pm and 3pm.

On Sunday, the 11th, the action moves to Comox with a noon start course at North East Woods and the Highland Trails. The meet will begin and end at the very accessible parking lot near Guthrie and Torrence Roads, east of the Highland School playing fields.

For all 3 courses, instructors will be on hand to help out and explain the basics of the sport of orienteering. Participants may register for one of 3 courses at each meet location: Novice, Intermediate and Advanced. The Advanced courses are designed for an experienced orienteer to complete in about an hour; and for others about two hours time.

A Saturday evening social is planned and all participants are invited to join their new Orienteering friends for a potluck and course awards.

For further information call Comox 250-890-0983, Victoria 250-592-4944 or visit http://vico.whyjustrun.ca/ to download the brochure with all of the NIO Festival details.
